Mechanics

Sanity

Sanity has a maximum of 100. In draining areas, depletion from full to death takes about 2 minutes. Elsewhere, it refills from empty in about 40 seconds. Reaching 0 causes death and costs 1 Prestige. [1]

Obtainment

An early quest awards sanity potions, and the potions NPC in the starter village sells them. [2]

Recovery

Sanity potions provide another way to restore sanity. [3]

Campfires and sanity potions are community-reported recovery options. [4]

Existing campfires restore sanity. The runner outpost also restores sanity and functions like a campfire. [5]

Qualifying monster kills restore 2 Sanity. Certain consumables and abilities also restore it. Insanity resistance slows the drain, and owning any Class permanently reduces the drain by 20%. [6]

Sanity decreases inside the maze at night. The green bar represents sanity; reaching zero causes instant death. [7]

Location

Some areas drain Sanity only at night; others drain it continuously. Settlements and safe ground never drain it. Safe pockets within draining areas restore Sanity normally. [9]

Requirements

Entering an area before meeting its quest-progress requirement causes 15× Sanity drain, taking about 8 seconds from full Sanity to death. Entry remains possible. [10]

Strategy

Campfires and potions are recommended for managing danger from low sanity. [11]

Effects

Sanity drain was reduced from 0.8 per second to 0.5 per second. [12]
